Ghana’s Ministry of Health has formally congratulated Kwabena Mintah Akandoh following his election as Chairman of Committee B at the World Health Assembly, calling the appointment a significant nod to the country’s rising influence in international health policy.
Committee B is one of the two principal pillars of the World Health Assembly, the decision-making body of the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Unlike Committee A, which focuses primarily on technical and health matters, Committee B manages the operational machinery of global health governance.
Its remit covers finance, administration, oversight, accountability, and institutional reforms, as well as collaboration with the United Nations and other intergovernmental bodies.
In a statement celebrating the appointment, the Ministry highlighted the strategic importance of the role in keeping the WHO running effectively.
“In many ways, it is within this committee that key decisions are shaped on how global health systems are managed, strengthened, and sustained globally,” the Ministry noted.
The appointment comes at a time when the sustainability and financing of global health institutions remain under intense international scrutiny.
Akandoh’s leadership of the committee is expected to place Ghana at the centre of these critical administrative and structural debates over the coming year.
Officials expressed optimism that the milestone would translate into greater visibility for West African health priorities on the world stage, viewing the election as a direct endorsement of Ghana’s leadership capabilities.
“We are proud that the election of the Honorable Minister into this role reflects growing confidence in Ghana’s participation in global health discussions,” the Ministry statement continued, adding that it underscores “the country’s contribution to shaping how the world responds to health challenges.”
