Volta Region Harbors Over 100 Illegal Border Crossings, Warns Interior Minister

June 3, 2026
Muntaka-Mubarak-747x375

Despite its reputation as one of Ghana’s most peaceful areas, the Volta Region still accounts for a major portion of illegal entry points into the nation.

Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak revealed this information during a meeting in Ho with traditional chiefs, Christian leaders, and Islamic clerics.

The discussion took place during his two-day official tour of the Volta Region.

The Minister explained that authorities have mapped out over 100 illicit border crossings in the area, which enable foreign citizens to cross into Ghana undetected and without legal papers.

This ongoing issue has led to the creation of more than 60 internal checkpoints throughout the nation, though only two are currently operating within the Volta Region itself.

Mr. Mubarak cautioned that allowing undocumented foreigners to continuously slip through these illegal pathways jeopardizes national security and elevates the danger of terrorist elements entering the country.

Consequently, he called upon the public, especially residents living near the borders, to cooperate with law enforcement in tracking border activity and to stop helping illegal immigrants bypass official checkpoints.

“Given the current situation in West Africa, we all need to be alert. I have been informed that in this region alone, we have identified 102 illegitimate crossing points—places where it is not authorized for people to pass. We have now come to realize that we, and by ‘we’ I mean all of us, are aiding people to enter our country without proper documentation.

“As a result, we are unable to even collect their data to know who is in the country—whether it is Kwame, Muntaka, Wahu, or Mohammed.

“We are assisting them with motorbikes, cars, and other means to smuggle them into our country. If we do not all contribute to ensuring peace and security in our nation, I believe we risk endangering our country through both our actions and inactions, especially here in this region.”
