The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) gathered at the Accra International Airport on Saturday evening to enroll returning Ghanaian citizens into the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The registration drive coincided with the arrival of nearly 350 Ghanaians, who were flown back to Accra on a government-sponsored repatriation flight following a wave of violence targeting foreigners in South Africa.

While the returnees cleared immigration and standard arrival procedures, NHIA personnel established dedicated registration stations directly within the terminal.

The specialised task force—comprising staff from the Corporate Affairs Directorate, the Greater Accra Regional Office, and the local La and Ayawaso district branches—operated throughout the night to register the evacuees and activate their health insurance coverage immediately.

This proactive initiative was launched under the direct instructions of the NHIA Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, who mandated that returning citizens be provided with immediate healthcare coverage the moment they stepped foot in the country.

Carrying what belongings they could salvage, the returnees processed through the arrival hall, where NHIA representatives walked them through the enrollment steps before they departed the airport grounds.

For the NHIA, the primary goal was to alleviate the burdens of these citizens after enduring a highly stressful ordeal, ensuring that medical expenses would be the least of their worries back home.

This latest arrival increases the total number of citizens safely evacuated from South Africa over the past few days to approximately 650.
