Thomas Partey to miss Ghana’s World cup opener after Canadian Court dismisses Visa appeal

A Canadian court has dismissed an appeal by Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey against the denial of his visa, officially ruling him out of Ghana’s opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The decision follows extensive efforts by the Ghanaian government to secure his entry through diplomatic channels after Canadian immigration authorities initially rejected his Temporary Resident Visa application.

The visa denial stems from ongoing criminal proceedings in the United Kingdom, where Partey faces multiple charges of rape.

Canadian authorities cited these active legal issues as the basis for their refusal.

In its petition, Ghana argued that the midfielder has not been convicted of any crime and should be presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

However, the appeal was ultimately rejected, leaving Ghana without its star midfielder for the start of the tournament.
