The Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has claimed that Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh lacks the expertise to run his sector and would be better suited to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
Speaking to a parliamentary correspondent for Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, the MP criticised the minister’s performance, arguing that his background lies in agriculture rather than healthcare.
The former Deputy Health Minister insisted that the current sector minister has struggled to manage the portfolio due to a lack of innovative ideas, asserting that Mr Akandoh’s efforts would yield far better results in agriculture.
He noted that as a serious rice farmer, the minister could have helped Ghana achieve self-sufficiency in rice production had he been appointed to the agricultural portfolio instead.
According to Mr Acquah, managing the health sector requires specialised expertise rather than an agricultural background, adding that the minister’s passion for the role is ultimately creating problems for him.
Further labelling the Health Ministry as one of the most condemnable ministries under its current leadership, the MP stated that the sector is stagnant and plagued by constant human resources and infrastructure issues.
He accused the government of doing little to improve healthcare in the country.
“If the government appointed him as the Agric Minister, all his efforts he is spending at the Health Ministry would have been fruitful, and Ghana could have enjoyed his handiwork because when it comes to agric, he performs better. If Akandoh is our Agric Minister, by now, Ghana would have been self-sufficient in the production of rice because on his own, he’s a serious rice farmer. Health Ministry needs health expert. Akandoh’s passion for the Health Ministry is giving him a problem, but in agric it would be better for him. Managing the Health Ministry is critical, which needs a health expert to perform better, but not an agric expert like Akandoh. It is one of the most condemnable ministries. Currently, there’s nothing happening at the Health Ministry. Everyday, if not HR issues, then infrastructure issues, and it is not helping.”
