More than 4,000 public sector employees currently paid by the government have defaulted on their student loans, according to Controller and Accountant-General Kwesi Agyei.

Speaking on Thursday, June 18, at the 20th-anniversary launch of the Student Loan Trust Fund (SLTF), Mr. Agyei stated that his department is partnering with the SLTF to reclaim these funds via direct payroll deductions.

This joint initiative leverages public-sector payroll regulations to reinforce loan recovery, protecting the fund’s financial health so future tertiary students can access identical financial aid.

“We have already identified over 4,000 on the government payroll through the collaboration with the Trust Fund. In the coming days, we will engage with the Trust Fund on the modalities of implementing these deductions. We envisage that this deduction will become one of the important statutory sanctions on their salaries,” he said.

The upcoming salary deductions target greater compliance among former beneficiaries now working in the civil service.

By accelerating recoveries and bolstering the fund’s long-term viability, officials aim to secure continuous education financing for upcoming generations, aligning with the SLTF’s recent, intensified focus on boosting repayment rates to support its ongoing operations.
