A man who impersonated an official from the National Identification Authority (NIA) to defraud members of the public has been jailed for 30 days by the Gbese District Court.
Fidelis Samuel Mensah was arrested at the NIA Regional Office in Accra following a joint sting operation by the authority’s staff and its Police Investigation Unit.
The court heard that Mensah targeted unsuspecting applicants by offering fraudulent assistance with Ghana Card registrations and data updates.
Through this scheme, he unlawfully obtained cash, mobile phones, and personal identity documents from his victims.
Mensah pleaded guilty to charges of stealing and defrauding by false pretences, resulting in an immediate conviction on his own plea.
Following the sentencing, the NIA issued a statement urging the public to remain vigilant against fraudsters and to engage exclusively with authorised personnel at official service points.
