NDC fails to deliver after exploiting economic hardship to win power, says MP

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has failed to deliver on major campaign promises used to win the 2024 election, according to Kwabre East Member of Parliament, Hon. Akwasi Gyamfi Onyina-Acheampong.

Speaking on the current state of governance, the MP stated that the NDC capitalised on economic hardships and tough decisions made by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, only to backtrack on its pledges after taking office.

“Based on these circumstances that we found ourselves in and we took some of these drastic decisions that Ghanaians were not happy about, the NDC government in twenty twenty-four used this as major campaign tools,” he said.

Hon. Onyina-Acheampong pointed to what he described as the government’s abandonment of its proposed 24-hour economy initiative, which was marketed as a key job-creation strategy.

“They said the economy was not going, we’re not creating jobs so they will do twenty-four hour economy formula one-three-three. One job three shifts three people,” he stated. “They said they will recruit people into the public sector because if you are going to do twenty-four hour economy means that you need to recruit a lot of police, a lot of security people. So they said they were going to do that. Now they’ve backtracked. Twenty-four hour economy, no one is seeing it. It’s not happening,” he added.

The MP also accused the administration of letting down the agricultural sector after promising better prices to cocoa and cashew farmers.

“They said cocoa farmers will enjoy and that they were going to increase from the three thousand one we gave to six thousand five and six thousand, sometimes they mention seven thousand… Cocoa farmers are crying because their price have been reduced from three thousand one to two thousand five. Cashew farmers are crying because no one is buying cashew at the moment. The cashew is rotten in their farms,” he said.

Turning to healthcare infrastructure, Hon. Onyina-Acheampong criticised the slow progress on hospital projects, noting that the NDC pledged to complete all Agenda 111 hospitals and operationalise at least ten.

“They said they will complete all the Agenda one one one hospitals. They said they will do ten. Even the ten, we don’t know what has happened. Even the ones that were ninety-eight percent completed, they just had to operationalize it. That one too they have left it for one and a half years. It’s still in the bush and the buildings are deteriorating.”

Furthermore, the MP argued that pledges of automatic postings for newly qualified nurses and teachers remain unfulfilled, contrasting the current struggling system with the previous government’s recruitment record.

“They said they will do automatic posting… meaning that they will post everybody. So they voted for them. Now they come into power and they are struggling to do seven thousand. We recruited over twenty-two thousand people per year, nurses and teachers, from twenty nineteen to twenty twenty-four. Even seven thousand, you have to wake up at night, twelve, one.

They say portal is closed. They are struggling,” he said, adding that security services recruitment has similarly stalled: “Five hundred thousand people applied. They are barely doing one percent.”

Hon. Onyina-Acheampong alleged that the NDC has breached its timeline for compensating victims of the financial sector clean-up, having promised full restoration within twelve months.

“They said the depositors who had lost money in their financial sector cleanup, they were going to restore everybody within one year of them coming into power. They took money from five hundred thousand people. What is happening in this country?” he asked.
