The Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with leading Italian engineering and manufacturing firm Danieli & C. Officine Meccaniche S.p.A.

This agreement represents a major step forward for Ghana’s industrial expansion under President John Dramani Mahama.

Held at the Italian Ambassador’s residence in Ghana, the signing ceremony highlights administration efforts to develop an Integrated Industrial Park within the Tema Heavy Industrial Zone.

Danieli intends to invest roughly €300 million in downstream aluminium infrastructure.

This funding covers a state-of-the-art foil rolling plant designed to produce 40,000 to 45,000 tonnes of value-added foil products annually across ten categories for the packaging, pharmaceutical, food service, and industrial sectors.

Additionally, the investment will establish a Centre of Excellence dedicated to advanced aluminium processing training, innovation, and technical development, which aims to become a regional hub for technology transfer and skills.

During the event, Danilo Dreolini of the Danieli Group described the project as a critical opportunity for Ghana to convert its natural resources into high-value manufactured exports.

He reaffirmed Danieli’s commitment to expanding its contribution to Ghana’s industrial growth.

Italian Ambassador Laura Ranalli pledged her office’s complete backing, noting that the agreement mirrors growing industrial cooperation between the two nations.

Mr Reindorf Twumasi Ankrah, Chief Executive Officer of GIADEC, stated that the agreement signals a strategic shift toward building a fully integrated aluminium value chain in Ghana.

“GIADEC will continue to partner with credible global firms to position Ghana as an emerging hub for advanced aluminium manufacturing in West Africa,” he added.

Developed by ARISE Integrated Industrial Platforms (ARISE IIP) alongside GIADEC and Tema Development Corporation (TDC) Ltd, the chosen site within the Tema Heavy Industrial Zone provides excellent logistical links. It sits near the VALCO smelter, Tema Port, and established infrastructure, ensuring efficient export manufacturing.

This collaboration will accelerate Ghana’s transition from shipping raw bauxite to retaining domestic value through integrated production. It will generate direct and indirect employment, foster manufacturing clusters in Tema, and use the Centre of Excellence to boost technical expertise.

Ultimately, the project will lift Ghana’s export competitiveness, increase foreign exchange revenues from international markets, and bolster investor confidence in the country’s manufacturing sector.

The ceremony concluded with witnesses from GIADEC, the Danieli Group, the Italian Embassy, and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources signing off on the initiative.
