Ghana issues South Africa travel warning amid anti-African campaigns

June 29, 2026

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an urgent travel advisory directing its citizens to exercise extreme caution when planning travel to or moving within South Africa.

The warning comes in response to heightened anti-African campaigns and a series of planned nationwide demonstrations and shutdowns orchestrated by local activist groups.

According to the official statement released from Accra, the Ministry noted that a series of unofficial “departure deadlines” directed at foreign African nationals could spark a wave of unrest.

“The planned nationwide protests and shutdown called for on 30th June, 2026 as well as the unofficial departure deadline directed at foreign African nationals by certain activist groups could lead to further incidents of intimidation, violence and attacks,” the Ministry stated.

While the Government of Ghana acknowledged assurances from South African authorities that these deadlines have no legal backing and that law enforcement is prepared to maintain order, it has nonetheless urged
Ghanaian nationals to remain highly vigilant.

Prospective travellers have been strongly advised to reconsider non-essential transit to areas expecting heavy public gatherings, to avoid road blockades, and to strictly refrain from travelling after dark.

For citizens currently residing in South Africa, the advisory recommends limiting unnecessary movements, keeping essential medications and emergency supplies close at hand, and ensuring travel documents and permits remain valid and accessible.

The Ministry has requested that any threats or acts of intimidation be reported immediately to the South African Police Service and the Ghana High Commission.

Reaffirming its position on the situation, the government added, “The Government of Ghana reiterates its commitment to the safety and welfare of all Ghanaian citizens abroad and urges all nationals to remain calm, law-abiding and security conscious at all times.

” Individuals requiring emergency consular assistance have been directed to contact the High Commission of Ghana in Pretoria via their official emergency channels.
