President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister for Finance to release GHS 300 million from the Contingency Fund to tackle the devastating impact of recent floods in southern Ghana.

The financial intervention follows hours of unusually heavy rainfall that submerged parts of the capital, Accra, and several surrounding communities.

The funding is split equally between immediate humanitarian assistance and long-term infrastructure protection, with GHS 150 million allocated to finance urgent relief efforts for flood-affected persons and another GHS 150 million dedicated to mitigation measures aimed at reducing future incidents.

To support ongoing rescue operations, the President has ordered the immediate deployment of the Ghana Armed Forces and the Police Service to collaborate with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

Following an aerial assessment of the worst-hit areas earlier today, a statement issued by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President, confirmed that a raft of steps is being implemented to safeguard residents and prevent further flooding.
