‘No More Excuses’: Justice Forum calls on President Mahama to cement legacy by eradicating perennial floods

The Convener for the Justice and Accountability Forum, Nana Bonsu, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to do whatever it takes to eradicate the nation’s perennial flooding once and for all.

According to the Convener, one of the most reassuring legacies President Mahama could leave behind after his second term would be a definitive solution to the recurrent floods that routinely wreak havoc on Ghanaians.

Expressing his deep condolences to the families who have lost loved ones in the recent disaster, Nana Bonsu described the situation as deeply unfortunate.

He lamented that losing even a single life to flooding is a terrible tragedy, let alone the 12 casualties officially confirmed so far. He further warned that the final death toll is highly likely to surpass the initial figures.

Speaking on the Frontline programme on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Nana Bonsu told host Kwabena Agyapong that the perennial flooding stems from a combination of public attitude, a failure to enforce existing laws, and a lack of political will by successive governments.

He stressed that Ghana has absolutely no excuse for failing to address the crisis.

“President Mahama returned to office with a promise to leave a sterling legacy behind. I want to tell him that resolving the perennial flooding situation must, at all costs, be part of that legacy. He does not need massive funds or external resources; he simply must ensure that he does whatever it takes to tackle this crisis. I understand the officially confirmed death toll is 12, but that figure is likely to rise because seven people are currently reported missing.

This is precisely why I am stressing the need for President Mahama to resolve this crisis once and for all. This loss of life is unforgivable, and the property damage runs into millions of Ghana cedis. We must never witness this again, and President Mahama must act decisively, as it will secure him a truly positive legacy.”
