The death toll from torrential rains that have flooded communities across Ghana has risen to 34, according to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
The Central Region has been the hardest hit by fatalities, accounting for 18 deaths. It is followed by the Greater Accra Region with 12, and the Volta Region, which has recorded four cases.
NADMO’s Director of Inspectorate, Richard Amo Yarrey, warned that the figure is likely to increase as official verifications continue.
He stated that rescue teams are working to retrieve missing bodies and deploy relief supplies to affected areas.
The floods have devastated seven regions, leaving 89,736 people displaced across the country.
Greater Accra has recorded the highest number of displaced residents at 54,712, followed by the Central Region with 21,882, and the Volta Region with 8,534.
Elsewhere, the Western Region and Eastern Region recorded 2,020 and 190 displaced persons respectively, while 937 people were affected in the Western North Region. In the Ashanti Region, the floods have left 1,461 people homeless.
