The Ministry of Health is committed to expanding clinical training space for medical students across the country, according to the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.

Speaking in Parliament, Mr Akandoh said the move aims to meet the growing demand for medical education and boost the number of practicing doctors.

“Health recognizes the importance of expanding medical training capacity particularly in view of the increasing demand for medical education and the need to produce more doctors for the country,” he stated.

The Minister clarified that while undergraduate training is managed by universities under the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health is responsible for clinical training from the fourth to the sixth year. The health ministry also regulates standards through the Medical and Dental Council.

Mr Akandoh identified Korle Bu, Komfo Anokye, Tamale, Cape Coast, Ho and Sunyani Teaching Hospitals as the main clinical training platforms currently available.

Their mandate is provided under the Ghana Health Service and Teaching Hospitals Act, 1996, Act 525.

“I wish to assure the house that the ministry remains committed to working with the Ministry of Education, the universities, teaching hospitals, and the Medical and Dental Council to expand clinical training space whilst maintaining the required standards,” he said.
