President John Dramani Mahama has announced the establishment of Ghana Medical Equipment Services Limited, a subsidiary of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, designed to ensure the efficient management and maintenance of critical medical equipment in public hospitals nationwide.

He made the announcement during the commissioning of the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory at the National Cardiothoracic Centre, located within the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, on July 9, 2026.

The new facility aims to enhance specialist cardiac care and significantly improve access to quality healthcare for all Ghanaians.

In his remarks, the President noted that the government has learnt from the past and has taken proactive steps to prevent the mismanagement of health equipment in public health facilities.

He recalled that while serving as Vice President under the late John Evans Atta Mills, the administration spent over $250 million purchasing vital equipment for all major public health facilities across the country.

Through that initiative, these facilities received CT scanners, MRI machines, X-ray equipment, and various other essential diagnostic tools.

However, a few years later, it became apparent that most of that equipment had not been properly maintained and had consequently broken down, leaving hospitals to call on the government for further retooling or complete replacements.

Reflecting on this challenge, President Mahama stated: “It is not a sustainable model and so we have established a different model for this retooling we are doing. And so Cabinet has approved the establishment of the Ghana Medical Services Limited which would be a subsidiary of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund.”

He explained that this new entity will be managed by biomedical engineers who will oversee and supervise the use and maintenance of the equipment.

Furthermore, he stressed that Ghana Medical Equipment Services Limited will be in charge of repairs and will replace any obsolete equipment across national health facilities.
