The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has released GH¢1.2 billion to pay claims submitted by credentialed healthcare providers across Ghana for the first half of 2026.
NHIA Deputy Chief Executive for Finance and Investments, Anatu Anne Seidu Bogobiri (Esq.), announced this during a staff durbar at the Accra Head Office. She stressed that prompt claims payments are essential to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
“Claims payment remains the crescendo of all our activities. Operations, we can huff and puff, but if you don’t pay claims, NHIA, we’ve not yet done anything,” she stated.
Mrs. Bogobiri explained that the timely payments reflect the commitment of Executive Management, led by Chief Executive Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, to boost provider confidence and maintain steady healthcare services for active NHIS members.
She outlined recent milestone achievements by the Finance and Investment Directorate, including a cashless revenue collection system, a revised Financial Management Manual, and financial management training for staff.
She also noted that parliament approved the NHIA’s 2026 allocation formula on April 10, clearing the path for key infrastructure developments like the new office building and car park.
On financial transparency, Mrs. Bogobiri confirmed that the directorate cleared inherited backlogs and submitted its 2025 financial statements by the February 28, 2026 deadline. The Audit Service subsequently ranked the NHIA sixth out of 76 state institutions for timely submissions.
First-quarter statements have already been submitted, and second-quarter reports are ready.
While reassuring staff of management’s focus on their welfare through timely salaries and per diems, Mrs. Bogobiri issued a directive on financial discipline. She warned that any unretired accountable imprest would be deducted directly from staff salaries starting July 10, 2026.
Additionally, revised payment workflow approval limits will soon be rolled out.
The NHIA also expects to merge its financial platform with the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) by the end of 2026 to maximize accountability and operational efficiency.
