An aspiring National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Kwadwo Agyei Yeboah, popularly known as ‘Nana Kay’, has taken a heavy swipe at the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), warning the administration to stop using state institutions to intimidate members of the opposition.
He accused the government of gross lawlessness and abusing the human rights of opposition members through arbitrary arrests, intimidation, and constant harassment without justifiable cause.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Nana Kay lamented that the government is deploying “Rambo-style” arrests against NPP members.
He, however, urged party supporters not to be discouraged by these tactics. Instead, he encouraged NPP members to remain calm, regardless of how hostile the government treats their officials.
Commenting specifically on the alleged arrest of Denis Miracles Aboagye, the special aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Nana Kay noted that the details remain unconfirmed. He added that until Mr Aboagye is granted access to his lawyers and family, the party cannot officially verify the reasons behind his detention.
Directly condemning the current political climate, Nana Kay said:
“The human rights we have protected, the democracy we have guarded and protected over three decades, the NDC is using just four years to destroy them. I am afraid of what is happening.”
He also slammed the head of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Raymond Archer, warning him that power is transient and he will not stay in office forever.
“Nobody is against EOCO conducting its official duties, but let’s pretend the allegations against Miracles are true and he was arrested over corruption issues, is EOCO the appropriate body to investigate that? What is happening?
“The second coming of President John Dramani Mahama was to come and do everything possible to destroy the NPP. But we want to state categorically that the NPP as a political party is strong and firm, and nothing can intimidate us. They can even arrest Dr Bawumia; nothing will prevent us from criticising this very wicked government. We are in this country and floods have killed several people, and you have your Greater Accra Regional Minister accepting the Best Minister’s Award,” he added.
Nana Kay further pointed out the hypocrisy of the current administration, referencing individuals like Sammy Gyamfi, who is now the Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD. He recalled how Mr Gyamfi fiercely insulted and criticised the former NPP President and his appointees over flooding issues, yet the nation is currently witnessing far worse flood disasters under the NDC.
He stressed that the arrest of Miracles Aboagye is nothing short of pure intimidation and an abuse of power, comparing the current administration’s governance style to that of the late Ugandan dictator, Idi Amin, who ruthlessly abused opponents for criticising him.
In a related development, Nana Kay also condemned the manner in which broadcast journalist Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah was arrested.
While stating that he is not against the law taking its course if there are legitimate reasons for an arrest, he alleged that Mr Afrifa was assaulted and manhandled by the police—a heavy-handed approach he strongly rejects.
