The National Cardiothoracic Centre (NCTC) at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has successfully treated its first batch of patients at its newly commissioned, ultra-modern Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory (Cath Lab).
In a landmark medical breakthrough for the facility, a total of four cardiac patients on Monday became the very first beneficiaries of specialised treatments at the new laboratory.
The medical team, working in close collaboration with a team of visiting cardiac specialists from the Mount Carmel Hospital in Ohio, USA, successfully implanted pacemakers in all four patients.
The newly installed, state-of-the-art Cath Lab is equipped with advanced imaging technology to perform minimally invasive procedures, reducing the need for open-heart surgeries for certain cardiac conditions.
According to authorities at the hospital, the collaboration with their American counterparts did not only bring immediate relief to the four patients but also served as a crucial hands-on knowledge-sharing session for local medical practitioners.
In a statement issued by the management of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, the institution expressed profound gratitude to the key players whose funding and political will made the project a reality.
The hospital specifically thanked the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for his administration’s support towards the project.
They also extended appreciation to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund and other external stakeholders whose invaluable resources and dedication contributed to the successful installation and commissioning of the facility.
The management added that the new Cath Lab will significantly reduce the waiting time for heart patients in the country and position the NCTC as a premier hub for cardiac care across the West African sub-region.
