Ghanaians gave me only one more term, and my focus now is to deliver on promises – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to fully execute the mandate handed to him by the electorate, assuring the public that his administration is focused on delivering on its campaign pledges.

Speaking at an event held at the Presidency, the Head of State noted that the Ghanaian people had granted him a single final term, a responsibility he intends to respect to the letter.

“I just make a little comment. The people of Ghana gave me a mandate for one term and I am working hard to meet the promises I made them,” he remarked.

The President further revealed that he has cautioned his cabinet ministers against complacency, urging them to accelerate the implementation of state projects and policies.

“And so I always tell my ministers I say let’s number our days so that we can work harder to meet the promises we made the Ghanaian people,” he stated.

Touching on the brewing legal debate regarding the length of a president’s stay in office, President Mahama referenced a lawsuit before the Supreme Court that seeks to interpret the constitutional provisions surrounding the presidential term limit.

“I note that people have gone to the Supreme Court seeking interpretation of the clause that governs the tenure of the President. If you ask my personal opinion I thought that it was clear enough. Me I’ve read it over several times. It’s exactly what it says,”
President Mahama observed.

Nonetheless, he maintained that the litigating parties are well within their democratic rights to approach the apex court for constitutional clarity.

“But if they want to ask the Supreme Court that is their business. But I know that the people of Ghana gave me one additional term and I’m going to work to meet the trust that they put in me.”
