Budget Review 2026: GUTA demands action on Women’s Bank, more tax relief, and long-term cedi stability

July 22, 2026
GUTA

Nana Kwabena Peprah, the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), has urged the government to continue easing operational conditions for traders to enhance their overall contribution to the national economy.

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM ahead of the budget presentation, Nana Peprah outlined the trading community’s key expectations for the Finance Minister.

High among these priorities is the full implementation of the pledge to establish a dedicated bank for women traders.

He noted that many women in the sector are eagerly awaiting the rollout of the initiative to access much-needed capital to expand their businesses.

“The government before assuming office promised to establish the Women’s Development Bank as part of efforts to support female traders. It has been a while, but we’ve not heard anything about the bank, and so we are expecting that the Minister will provide an update on the bank,” he stated.

Addressing broader fiscal measures, the GUTA executive acknowledged that while the government has delivered on some of its promises to remove nuisance taxes, several burdensome levies remain in place, hindering business growth and profitability.

On monetary developments, Nana Peprah commended the government’s significant strides in stabilizing the cedi against the US dollar, emphasizing the need to maintain the policies driving local currency stability.

He added that while the reduction of loan interest rates to 12 percent represents a positive development, failing to safeguard these economic gains in the long term could severely impact trading activities across the country.
