President John Dramani Mahama has declared that Africa’s ambition to build a robust pharmaceutical manufacturing industry is no longer a mere scribble on paper, but a vision steadily turning into reality.

Addressing Heads of State and government on the second day of the African Union Extraordinary Summit, President Mahama stressed the urgent need for the continent to curb its heavy reliance on imported medicines and medical supplies by investing heavily in local production and industrial transformation.

He noted that depending on external sources for essential health commodities remains a major vulnerability.

Strengthening domestic manufacturing capacity, he argued, is vital to achieving health security, driving economic transformation, and creating jobs for Africa’s youth.

Highlighting a concerning decline in international development assistance for health, President Mahama warned that many African nations remain overly dependent on external funding to sustain their health systems.

He described the shift as a defining moment that demands bold, homegrown solutions.

Framing health investment as both a social and economic priority, the President called for a decisive shift from pledges to concrete implementation, directly linking resilient health systems to sustained economic growth.

In a direct appeal to African leaders, health ministers, and international partners, President Mahama urged immediate execution, emphasizing that the continent’s health future hinges on decisions that yield real results.
