Otumfuo decries abandonment of hospital projects, calls for urgent completion

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has expressed deep concern over the habitual abandonment of hospital projects by successive governments, warning that the trend continues to fuel severe congestion and the persistent “no-bed syndrome” across the country’s major health facilities.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Minister of Health and a delegation from the Ghana Medical Trust Fund at the Manhyia Palace, the Asantehene stressed that uncompleted health infrastructure leaves existing hospitals dangerously overstretched and unable to cope with patient demand.

He urged the government to prioritise finishing these abandoned projects to ease pressure on health workers and significantly improve healthcare delivery nationwide.

The visit by the Health Minister, accompanied by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Frank Amoakohene, and key sector leaders, was aimed at briefing His Majesty on critical progress and ongoing reforms within Ghana’s health sector.

The delegation included the Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, the heads of the National Ambulance Service and the Traditional Medicine Practice Council, Yakubu Tobor Yusuf, alongside top directors from the Ministry of Health.

Briefing the Asantehene, the Minister highlighted key government interventions, including President John Dramani Mahama’s Free Primary Healthcare policy and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as “Mahamacares.”

He assured His Majesty that active steps are being taken to address the inherited backlog of over 100,000 unrecruited health workers, ensure the equitable distribution of staff across the regions, and accelerate the completion of crucial infrastructure projects, including the Trede, Oforikrom, and Sewua hospitals.
