The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has informed Parliament that the government is expanding interventions to address critical shortages of blood across healthcare facilities in the country.
Responding to parliamentary questions regarding current supply constraints, the Minister highlighted that designated blood collection centres have grown to 43 nationwide, outperforming targets set for the second quarter of 2026.
“And the number of designated blood collection units has also increased to forty-three exceeding the target for the second quarter of twenty twenty-six.”
Hon. Akandoh further stated that dedicated blood collection services were launched directly within hospital settings on 16 March 2026.
This measure seeks to streamline the donation process for visitors and foster a culture of voluntary giving.
“In addition, blood collection service was also introduced at hospital on sixteenth March twenty twenty-six to make blood donations more accessible to encourage voluntary donations.”
To support these operational developments, the National Blood Service is ramping up awareness campaigns across educational institutions, workplaces, religious organisations, and local communities.
The outreach campaign relies on joint public education initiatives alongside media partners, the Information Services Department, and the National Commission for Civic Education.
These multi-pronged strategies come at a critical time as depletion of blood banks nationwide continues to disrupt surgical operations, compromise maternal care, and worsen outcomes for individuals managing long-term health conditions.
