Health Ministry Partners FDA and WHO to upgrade capacity of supply chain officers

The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has assured Parliament of the government’s commitment to fortifying the nation’s pharmaceutical supply network by enforcing rigorous licensing regimes and capacity-building programmes that meet international benchmarks.

Briefing lawmakers during a Parliamentary session, the Minister highlighted that the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) Guideline 851 sets precise operational criteria for facilities handling medical supplies and storage.

Addressing the floor of the House, Hon. Akandoh explained: “Eight five one has established guideline on licensing of medical products, storage facilities.

These guidelines are designed to ensure the safety, quality, and efficacy performance of medical products.”

The Health Minister indicated that the regulatory framework established by the FDA conforms to World Health Organisation (WHO) standards and remains binding on all commercial entities engaged in storing and distributing pharmaceutical products across the country.

He further pointed out that regulatory officers systematically evaluate and certify these locations while offering ongoing professional development for critical operational personnel.

He stated: “The FDA routinely inspects and license these facilities and also conduct continuous training of pharmacists, supply chain managers, warehouse staff, and logistics officers on WHO good storage and distribution practices to enhance the capacity of personnel.”

Hon. Akandoh concluded that these regulatory interventions form part of a broader strategy to establish a robust and dependable healthcare logistics framework nationwide.

He stressed: “These activities collectively support a resilient, transparent, and efficient health supply chain capable of delivering quality assured medical products to all levels of the health care systems in Ghana.”
