Afenyo-Markin slams government over unfulfilled pledges and galamsey inaction

August 1, 2026

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the government of applying double standards in the fight against illegal mining and failing to deliver on key manifesto promises, insisting Ghanaians want results rather than slogans.

Delivering the Minority’s closing remarks as Parliament adjourned today, Afenyo-Markin questioned the status of the promised Women’s Bank, an end to “family and friends” appointments, and the overhaul of the procurement system. He argued that government contracts are still awarded to political insiders rather than through genuine reform.

He further criticized the lack of visibility surrounding the Minister for Public Sector Reforms, whose office and work schedule remain unknown.

He also raised concerns over the 24-hour economy policy, the “one job, three shifts” initiative, and the promised fee-free first year for university students, stating these pledges are either failing or have collapsed entirely.
“Ghanaians did not vote for slogans.

They did not vote for craft incompetence. They voted for delivery,” he stated, adding that the government owes citizens answers instead of another speech.

Turning to the fight against illegal mining, the Minority Leader accused the administration of failing to act on information disclosed by the President himself during a March meeting with Organised Labour at Jubilee House.

He recalled President Mahama admitting he was aware members of his own party were involved in galamsey and explaining how illegal operators switch political allegiances when governments change.

Afenyo-Markin stressed that this admission proves the President knows the networks involved, yet five months later, the Attorney General has taken no statement from him to identify the culprits.

“No investigation. No prosecution,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

He added that the situation demonstrates a clear double standard—talking tough in public while failing to take concrete action behind the scenes—and demanded genuine enforcement rather than mere admissions.
