Mahama is a modern-day Idi Amin—ruthless, wicked, and evil — Nana Kay

An aspirant for the National Organiser position of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Kwadwo Agyei Yeboah, popularly known as Nana Kay, has described President John Dramani Mahama as a modern-day Idi Amin.

He stated that the President appears to be a ruthless, wicked, and cunning character who pretends to be gentle, but deep down, is an evil leader unleashing hatred against his political opponents.

He made these remarks when he officially launched his campaign to contest the party’s internal executive elections on Sunday, 2 August 2026.

The launch marks the formal commencement of his bid to lead the party’s operational machinery, with a focus on strengthening internal structures and re-energising the base across all 275 constituencies.

Addressing party members and supporters at the launch, Nana Kay stated that his decision to enter the race stems from years of direct involvement in party work and a commitment to ensuring local executives receive the resources required to maintain a robust organisational network.

He then tore into President John Dramani Mahama, accusing him of abusing his office and targeting political opponents who criticise his abysmal performance.

He lamented that political opponents who complain about the recent power outages, locally known as ‘dumsor’, are being arrested and manhandled, with some currently incarcerated.

“President John Dramani Mahama is a wicked man, behaving like Idi Amin who was ruthless, evil, and wicked, dealing with critics with the iron fist of a tyrant. Ghanaians are disappointed in the current administration because he has failed the people. Civil Society Organisations are quiet because of how terrible this President and his party are delivering. Currently, if you post on social media that dumsor is back, President Mahama sends people to arrest, intimidate, and maltreat you. This government lied its way into power,” he stated.

He further noted that the current administration promised to end illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, within two weeks, but what citizens now witness is that the government’s own officials are deeply involved and shielding themselves from prosecution.

“They promised a 24-hour economy with three shifts, but today, that is not the case. They promised to end galamsey in two weeks, but they are rather the kingpins of galamsey. The National Organiser and First Vice Chairman have been accused of being galamsey kingpins. The National Organiser even threatened the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the Attorney-General that if they dare invite him, he will mention names, so they have refused to investigate him. Yet, the President is going after his opponents and dealing with them ruthlessly,” he added.

Having served the NPP in various mobilisation roles over the years, Nana Kay has built a reputation as a hands-on party loyalist.

Supporters at the event expressed confidence in his candidacy, describing him as an accessible leader whose long-standing service uniquely positions him to bridge the gap between the national executive leadership and the grassroots.

His campaign team indicated that Nana Kay will begin a regional tour in the coming weeks to interact directly with delegates and present his strategy for revitalising the party’s organisational machinery.
