The Deputy National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, has defended the party’s decision to hold its “Ghana Democracy Under Attack” demonstration on August 6, 2026—a day set aside to commemorate the victims of the military helicopter crash.
Addressing concerns over the timing, he stated that while the tragic incident remains a deeply painful memory for the country, the living must address their present challenges and carry on with daily life.
The NPP recently secured police approval to stage the protest following the Court of Appeal’s decision to acquit and discharge former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, overturning her High Court conviction and 10-year prison sentence and othher related matters.
According to the party, the demonstration aims to highlight selective justice, judicial interference, the suppression of free speech, and the erosion of democratic governance under the current administration.
The opposition party faced public backlash for scheduling the protest on the exact date marking the one-year anniversary of the tragedy.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he posited that “between the dead and the living who is more important? So if the living is more important than the dead, then we have every right to protest over the misgovernance of this government.
Businesses are collapsing, Ghanaians are suffering and struggling, living cinditions have worsened and when Ghanaians complain, they are intimitaed. It is true that the death of these individuals was terrible and unfortunate however the living have to deal with their challenges. The point is that the dead are resting or in eternal rest and ao we the living must focus on our problems and solve them”.
He accused the government of shielding its appointees involved in criminal acts while systematically targeting opposition members.
This selective application of justice, he argued, undermines the administration’s promised “Operation Recover All Loot” campaign, characterising the situation as political persecution and a direct attack on fundamental human rights.
He added that citizens are being subjected to arbitrary arrests simply for voicing their grievances against worsening economic hardship.
“Democracy is crucial. The laws of Ghana gura tees freedom of speech and expression and yet, we have people being intimidated. When Ghanaians talk, they are arrested. Enough is enough. Ghanaians must have the liberty to express their views without being subjected to any abuse and intimidation. Even under the late Rawlings people talked and criticised. Omane Boamah was some i admired abd his death 2as painful but we must move on and deal.with our challenges.”
