Ghana Water Ltd announces three-day shutdown of Kpong treatment plant for critical repairs

August 5, 2026
GWCL

Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has announced a major three-day maintenance operation along the Kpong-Tema transmission pipelines, scheduled to run from Thursday, August 6, to Saturday, August 8, 2026.

The critical infrastructure exercise will involve isolating and replacing over 300 metres of deteriorated sections on both the 21-inch and 42-inch main transmission lines.

To facilitate the works, management confirmed that operations at the Kpong Water Treatment Plant will be temporarily suspended, leading to water supply interruptions and low pressure across large parts of the capital and surrounding areas.

Extensive eastern stretches of Accra—including Ashaiman, Spintex, Teshie, Nungua, Sakumono, Gbetsele, Katamanso, Zenu, Atadeka, Afienya, Appolonia, Prampram, Kpone, and Dawhenya—will experience total or partial outages. Communities near the source, including Kpong, Akuse, Somanya, and Atimpoku, are also set to be affected.

Explaining the necessity of the project, Ghana Water Ltd highlighted that standard engineering checks flagged severe degradation that demanded immediate intervention.

“Routine engineering assessments have identified more than 300 metres of deteriorated sections along the transmission pipelines that require urgent replacement to prevent major pipeline failures, reduce water losses and ensure reliable water supply,” the statement noted.

The utility provider clarified that the project forms part of its proactive infrastructure maintenance programme designed to boost supply reliability, efficiency, and long-term sustainability for consumers.

Technical teams will work continuously over the 72-hour window to ensure the replacement schedule is met and full distribution resumes promptly.

“The Company sincerely regrets the inconvenience this temporary interruption may cause and appeals to all affected customers to store adequate quantities of water ahead of the exercise,” GWL added.
