Repatriation for persons of African descent is a fundamental right rather than a gesture of charity, President John Mahama has asserted, urging African nations to create legal frameworks enabling the global African family to settle on the continent.
Speaking to the Jamaican Parliament on Tuesday, 4 August, during his official State Visit, President Mahama emphasised that recognizing the right of return is crucial for reconnecting Africa with its diaspora.
“The rights of persons of African descent in the diaspora to return to the mother continent is not an act of charity or compassion. Repatriation is not an act of kindness,” he stated.
“Repatriation is a right of all persons of African descent to return to the mother continent and settle or reside if they wish.”
Highlighting Ghana’s leadership on the issue, the President pointed to the Right of Abode Act passed in 2000, which grants eligible individuals of African descent permanent residency.
He disclosed that government is now working on a new Homeland Return Bill designed to streamline legal avenues for residence and citizenship.
The proposed law forms part of Ghana’s wider agenda to deepen ties with the diaspora.
Furthermore, President Mahama announced his intention to take the campaign to the continental stage should he assume the leadership of the African Union.
“This is one of the articles of the manifesto I wish to push when I become the AU Chairman, that all African nations must have a right of return for all members of the global African family,” he declared.
