Democracy Under Attack: NPP petitions Supreme Court and Jubilee House over alleged political persecution

Hundreds of New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters clad in red and black marched through Accra as part of the party’s nationwide “Democracy Under Attack” campaign, accusing the government of political persecution, selective justice, and the abuse of state institutions.

Led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the demonstration brought together party executives, Members of Parliament, former officials, and supporters to submit separate petitions to the Supreme Court and Jubilee House.

The party raised concerns over recent developments it claims undermine judicial independence and public trust, specifically citing the acquittal of former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo, and the 20-year imprisonment of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi.

The petition submission at Jubilee House was stalled by a brief standoff after security personnel restricted journalists from covering the event within the inner perimeter, prompting NPP leaders to pause until media access was restored.

Party leaders also initially declined to hand the document to Presidential Staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah, characterising the absence of President John Mahama or Chief of Staff Julius Debrah as a mark of disrespect.

Following further deliberations, the delegation presented the petition to Nana Yaa Jantuah after she assured them it would be delivered to the Presidency.
