The global football community has been plunged into mourning following the death of Jorge Messi, the father of legendary Argentine captain Lionel Messi, at the age of 68.
His passing comes just two months after the family publicly disclosed that he had been admitted to hospital to receive treatment for an ongoing medical condition.
Reports coming out of Argentina confirm that he passed away peacefully at approximately 10:00 p.m. local time on Friday, 7 August, at a medical facility in his hometown of Rosario, near the family residence.
The news was initially broke by local Argentine news outlets before being formally verified by Newell’s Old Boys, the historic club where the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner first developed his trade as a young boy.
In an emotional tribute released to honor his memory, the Rosario-based club lauded Jorge for his unwavering devotion to his son’s unmatched journey in the sport, acknowledging his vital presence behind the scenes.
“His constant companionship and behind-the-scenes leadership were essential in backing every step of Lionel, from his beginnings at Malvinas to the pinnacle of world football glory,” the club said.
