Ghana’s economic horizon remains bright on the back of a steady drop in inflation, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, has declared.
According to him, provisional estimates indicate that the national economy expanded by 6.4 per cent during the first quarter of 2026, outperforming the 6.2 per cent recorded in the corresponding period of the previous year.
Addressing a stakeholder engagement and dinner hosted by the apex bank in Sunyani, Dr Asiama explained that this upward trajectory was primarily spearheaded by robust activity within the services and industrial sectors. The high-profile gathering brought together captains of industry, commercial operators, trade associations, and key private sector players.
The central bank chief emphasised that the domestic economy has maintained its resilience, consistently demonstrating strong momentum alongside stable key macroeconomic indicators. He noted that this underlying stability underscores the efficacy of interventions executed jointly by the Bank of Ghana and the government.
Expressing optimism over heightened commercial ventures, industrial output, and the revival of tourism across the nation, the Governor highlighted the positive knock-on effects of foreign arrivals.
“In fact, we are seeing more and more people visiting and touring Ghana, and it helps to support economic activity,” he said.
Dr Asiama pointed out that business sentiment and consumer optimism are on the rise, boosted by a drop in commercial lending rates which has smoothed access to credit facilities for enterprises.
He nevertheless issued a note of caution regarding the nation’s exposure to international external shocks.
“We are a small open economy, and that means that we all come to anything that happens in the world whether we are part of it or not,” he said.
Illustrating his point, Dr Asiama referenced ongoing diplomatic and geopolitical friction between Iran and the United States, pointing out that despite Ghana’s lack of direct involvement, the domestic market remains susceptible to the fallout. He observed that wider Middle Eastern instability continues to exert pressure locally through volatile international crude prices.
Despite these external headwinds, the BoG Governor reiterated that economic performance remains commendable. He affirmed the central bank’s unwavering determination to rein in inflation, foster enterprise and investment, and drive durable growth to shield the nation against global uncertainties.
He added that the regional outreach reflects the central bank’s broader mandate to demystify its operations, deepen operational transparency, and bolster institutional credibility.
“We want to build stronger relationships with stakeholders and ensure that our policies respond to the needs of businesses and, of course, the people that we serve,” Dr Asiama stated.
