Ghana and the Kingdom of the Netherlands have taken a decisive step towards dismantling cross-border narcotics networks following the signing of a bilateral agreement aimed at tackling illicit drugs and illegal drug markets.
The agreement, formalised through a special Letter of Intent, was signed in Accra by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and the Dutch Minister of Justice and Security, D.M. van Weel, during an official ministerial visit to the country.
This high-level accord builds upon the foundation of the Accra Call to Action, a multilateral movement seeking robust global consensus and practical interventions against international syndicate operations.
Speaking after the signing ceremony, Mr Ablakwa emphasised the urgency of the intervention, noting that the illegal trade in narcotics continues to exact a devastating toll on societies worldwide. He highlighted that the influx of illegal substances poses severe threats to public health systems, damages the rule of law, compromises human rights standards, and destroys the futures of young citizens.
The Foreign Affairs Minister expressed firm optimism that targeted, dependable international partnerships remain the most effective weapon against syndicate networks. He added that direct bilateral cooperation between Accra and Amsterdam will disrupt the supply chains flooding local and international spaces with synthetic drugs, cocaine, and laundered criminal capital.
Mr Ablakwa praised his Dutch counterpart for making the official visit to Ghana, describing the engagement as a memorable milestone in strengthening diplomatic relations and security cooperation between the two nations.
