The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a stern warning to traders and the general public against the use of chemical substances to accelerate the ripening of plantains.

This follows a viral social media video exposing the hazardous practice at the Madina Market in Accra.

In response to the footage, the FDA, acting in collaboration with the Environmental Health Unit of the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly, launched an immediate investigation. Preliminary findings revealed that some traders were applying a product known as Ethemax to fast-track the natural ripening process.

According to the regulatory body, Ethemax contains Ethephon 480\text{ g/L SL} as its active ingredient and is strictly labelled as a plant growth regulator bearing a “Harmful” hazard warning.

The Authority confirmed it has identified and engaged the specific trader responsible for distributing the chemical within the market.

The FDA assured the public that it is taking the necessary regulatory action alongside relevant authorities against those involved in the “unauthorised sale, distribution or inappropriate use of the product.”

Officials heavily cautioned that applying agricultural chemicals at incorrect concentrations or to commodities for which they are not authorised poses severe health risks.

“We caution against the indiscriminate use of chemicals or other substances to accelerate plantain ripening, as any inappropriate use may result in unacceptable chemical residues and potentially compromise food safety,” the FDA statement read.

The Authority further warned that it will not hesitate to apply requisite sanctions against any individuals found culpable of these violations.

To safeguard public health, consumers are strongly advised to purchase fruits and vegetables solely from trusted sources and to wash fresh produce thoroughly with potable water before consumption. The FDA reiterated its commitment to continuous market surveillance and urged the public to promptly report any unhygienic food processing, unsafe storage, or inappropriate chemical use for immediate investigation.
