Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin claims Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie orchestrated a targeted plot to overthrow former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. Justice Torkornoo was ousted in September 2025 under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution after a Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang-led inquiry investigated allegations of misconduct against her.
The Effutu MP insists this campaign was driven entirely by Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s ambition to seize the top judicial post, pointing to the timeline of events leading directly to his appointment.
“My Lord Baffoe-Bonnie was part of the grand conspiracy against her predecessor, Gertrude Torkornoo,” Mr Afenyo-Markin said. “It was a grand conspiracy. Because he wants to be the Chief Justice. Obviously. Why? Why should I deny that?”
Suggesting that the broader bench was compromised, the Minority Leader stated that multiple Supreme Court justices turned on their peer, though he maintains the public will eventually learn the full scope of their involvement.
“He knows, I know, the Supreme Court judges are—you know—who conspired against their colleague. But one day, the true story will be told,” he said.
Reigniting political friction over the high-profile dismissal, Afenyo-Markin reiterated his demands to reinstate Justice Torkornoo—a debate that continues to fuel intense division between the opposition NPP and the ruling NDC.
