Alexander Afenyo-Markin has cautioned that current state officials—particularly executives at the Ghana Gold Board—could face severe bail demands in the future if the stringent terms currently applied to former public servants become the standard.

Addressing a press briefing on August 18, the Minority Leader drew parallels between ongoing investigations into past officials and the eventual exposure of the current administration upon a shift in power.

He pointed to alleged losses of GH¢22 billion at GoldBod, arguing that the restrictive precedents established under the present government could backfire on today’s leaders once political fortunes change.

The opposition continues to accuse the state of political persecution and demanding unreasonable bail terms under the guise of accountability.

Rather than serving justice, Afenyo-Markin noted, these tactics establish a dangerous legal framework that undermines standard judicial principles.

“The precedent being created through these stringent bail conditions could eventually lead to ‘scary’ consequences for current government officials once power changes hands.”
