Ghanaian students seeking higher education in Russia have received a major boost following an official visit to the European country by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

In a official statement released by the Minister, Russian academic scholarships allocated to Ghana have been doubled from 120 to 240 for each academic year.

According to Mr. Ablakwa, the fully-funded scholarship package will focus on critical areas of national development. The beneficiaries will prioritize studies in Artificial Intelligence (AI), engineering, petroleum sciences, and pharmaceuticals.

Beyond education, both nations held bilateral discussions to strengthen partnership in key technical and economic sectors. Ghana and Russia reached an agreement to advance cooperation regarding Ghana’s peaceful nuclear energy programme alongside its green transition goals. This initiative forms part of Ghana’s strategy to diversify its energy supply by integrating 700 megawatts (MW) of nuclear power into the national grid.

The foreign minister further highlighted that both governments resolved to work together on critical international issues, including counterterrorism, climate change mitigation, and reforms at the United Nations level.
