Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi has rejected comments from Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin suggesting that he could encounter “scary” bail terms should the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regain political authority.
Labeling the Minority Leader’s statements as misguided, Gyamfi argued that Afenyo-Markin neglected to conduct a fair evaluation of GoldBod’s achievements. Rebutting accusations regarding financial losses, Gyamfi highlighted substantial strides in advancing the nation’s precious metal processing capabilities.
“Under your tenure, not a gram of gold was refined in Ghana, but today over 9 million tonnes of gold we have bought is refined here in Ghana, and we are changing the value addition story of the country,” he said.
Gyamfi characterized Afenyo-Markin’s assertions as “the fanciful efficiency of a palm wine bar”, adding that the public ought to view them as light entertainment instead of serious legislative dialogue. Furthermore, he faulted the Minority Leader for failing to maintain the analytical rigor demonstrated by former leaders of the opposition block such as J.H. Mensah, Papa Owusu-Ankomah, and Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.
“So I will go to prison in his brain, and I will have onerous bail terms in his brain, and I am not afraid of any intimidating tactics because we are serving Ghana in good conscience and our results and posterity will speak for us,” Mr Gyamfi said.
These observations were delivered during the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, August 19, in reaction to a Tuesday media briefing held by the minority group. During that conference, Afenyo-Markin cautioned that current state officials—including GoldBod executives—would face severe bail demands under a future NPP government due to alleged losses totaling GH¢22 billion at the entity.
