Sammy Gyamfi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), has challenged Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to publicly refute the extortion allegations leveled against him.
Gyamfi insists he possesses concrete evidence backing his assertions and urged the Minority Leader to initiate legal proceedings, promising to present his proof before a judge.
Addressing the issue during an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, August 22, the GoldBod chief explained that Afenyo-Markin’s assertions regarding alleged financial irregularities at GoldBod were gravity-laden and required a direct rebuttal.
He clarified that his remarks were not intended as personal insults, but rather as a necessary response to unsubstantiated allegations targeting his stewardship of the entity’s financial dealings.
“I never insulted him. And nobody can show me one word that I used that was insulting,” Mr Gyamfi said.
Dismissing accusations that he escalated the matter into a personal vendetta, Gyamfi noted that throughout his extensive history of hosting press briefings and participating in political discourse, he has rarely deployed terms like “extortion” against political opponents.
“Have you ever heard me use the word extortion against any of my critics? Have you ever heard me? Why will I use this word now?” he asked.
He suggested that the background of his recent statements stems from private, unresolved friction between himself and the Minority Leader.
“There are many underlying issues between Afenyo-Markin and I that you don’t know and those watching don’t know,” Mr Gyamfi said.
Concluding his remarks, Gyamfi highlighted that Afenyo-Markin has neither disproved the core substance of the claims nor issued a threat of legal action over the statements.
“I’m a consummate democrat. I eat and drink debates because I’m not worried,” he said.
