Bawumia expresses confidence in Afenyo-Markin ahead of emergency parliamentary session

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has revealed that the Flag-Bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, expressed full confidence in his leadership during a private meeting at Dr. Bawumia’s residence in Accra. According to Afenyo-Markin, the meeting focused on party affairs and the legislative agenda as Parliament reconvenes today for an emergency sitting.

Afenyo-Markin stated that Dr. Bawumia directed the Minority to maintain strict focus on an alleged loss of over $1.7 billion, equivalent to 1.5% of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The loss stems from operations under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme involving GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana. He noted that the figure was confirmed by the International Monetary Fund’s August 2026 report.

“Dr Bawumia expressed his full confidence in my leadership of the Minority,” Afenyo-Markin stated. “He urged me to remain focused on the loss of over $1.7 billion, equivalent to 1.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), arising from the operations of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, a figure confirmed by the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) own August 2026 report. He cautioned me against being distracted by attempts to divert public attention from it.”

He added that the NPP presidential candidate charged the parliamentary caucus to use all constitutional mechanisms to demand answers from the executive branch. “He called on the Minority, under my leadership, to do everything within the rules of the House to ensure the Mahama government is held fully accountable to the people of Ghana for this loss. He commended the Minority for its efforts so far,” Afenyo-Markin noted.

Responding to the directive, the Minority Leader affirmed that the opposition remains dedicated to pursuing the matter on the floor of Parliament.

“I assured him that this is a national task the Minority intends to prosecute to the fullest extent of our ability, with the very best of intentions, and minded always by the interests of the Ghanaian people,” Afenyo-Markin declared. “I further informed him that this colossal loss, under the watch of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana, is firmly on the Minority’s agenda as Parliament reconvenes today. We remain resolute in this commitment, and we will not relent until the Ghanaian people receive the answers they deserve.”
