A major police operation in South Africa has resulted in the detention of four individuals following the fatal shooting of former two-weight world boxing champion Zolani Tete outside his residence.

The 38-year-old sports star died on Friday in Mdantsane, located in the Eastern Cape province. He was parked outside his property waiting for an entrance gate to open when masked assailants arrived on foot and opened fire on the vehicle.

A 27-year-old female passenger suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the assault and was rushed to a local hospital, where she remains under medical care.

Law enforcement teams executed targeted sweeps across Mdantsane, KuGompo City, and Scenery Park over the weekend to track down those involved. Authorities confirmed that four individuals are currently held in connection with the crime, while a fifth person brought in for questioning has been released.

A 22-year-old suspect apprehended on Saturday faces charges of murder and attempted murder. He is set to make his initial appearance at the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court today, 24 August.

Two additional suspects have been charged with the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. Detectives continue to interrogate the fourth detainee to establish the motive behind the targeted hit, with additional arrests expected as the investigation unfolds.

Tete enjoyed a standout international career, capturing the IBF super-flyweight crown in 2014 and holding the WBO bantamweight title from 2017 to 2019. He famously earned a place in boxing history in 2017 by recording an 11-second knockout against Siboniso Gonya—the fastest finish ever recorded in a world championship fight.
