Over 45 Million Tramadol Tablets, 8,500kg Narcotics Seized in 20 Months – Interior Minister

Ghana’s Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has disclosed that security agencies have confiscated over 8,500 kilogrammes of illicit drugs and intercepted roughly 45.4 million tramadol pills within the last 20 months.

According to him, these significant seizures reflect the heightened operations of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) aimed at crippling the illegal drug market, with a strong focus on curbing the rising abuse of synthetic substances among the youth.

He made these revelations during his presentation at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, August 24, 2026.

The Minister further stated that security forces have arrested 217 suspects and launched 165 prosecutions within the same timeframe.

“Narcotics Control has intensified its efforts, and imagine that in less than two years, over 45 million tablets of tramadol were seized and intercepted,” he added.

Highlighting the scope of the crackdown, Mr Mohammed-Mubarak stressed that government’s anti-narcotics strategy goes beyond arrests to hit the financial networks of syndicate bosses.

He revealed that authorities have recovered 73 properties and seized nearly 19 kilogrammes of gold linked to suspected drug-money laundering operations. Furthermore, financial accounts containing approximately GH¢6.9 million and $440,000 in cash connected to suspected drug operations have been frozen.

The Minister emphasised that enforcement goes hand-in-hand with prevention, noting that NACOC has stepped up grassroots awareness campaigns regarding the hazards of addiction.

He pointed out that over 2,000 sensitisation sessions have been delivered nationwide, spanning basic schools (1,153), secondary institutions (185), tertiary campuses (41), religious bodies (187), local communities (147), and corporate workplaces (235).

Despite these strides, the Interior Minister raised concerns over a critical missing link in the nation’s anti-drug crusade, lamenting that Ghana currently lacks a single state-run rehabilitation facility to care for victims of substance abuse.
