New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye launched a wide-ranging critique against state gold institutions, accusing the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) of fueling the persistence of illegal mining—commonly called galamsey—and asserting that its purchasing framework features severe gaps allowing illegal gold into the formal trade.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, he alleged that the institution cannot adequately distinguish between gold sourced from licensed operations and illegally mined supply, pointing out that stakeholders such as the Ghana Chamber of Mines and several Members of Parliament share similar concerns over the lack of effective verification mechanisms.
“GoldBod, I can tell you now, is the cause of the environmental destruction we are seeing. They are now responsible for galamsey,” he stated.
“If GoldBod is not buying galamsey gold, then who is?” he questioned, demanding clear answers from authorities while dismissing previous official pledges to improve traceability as insufficient.
Simultaneously, the opposition party pledged to aggressively challenge the government over a $1.7 billion loss reported by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) regarding the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP). Nana Boakye urged the Minority Leader and the NPP parliamentary caucus to mobilize every parliamentary law, committee hearing, order paper, and document request available to force public accountability surrounding the financial impact of the transaction.
“We are not backing off. Not now, not tomorrow, not until every question is answered in full, and in public, and under proper scrutiny,” he said.
“Use every relevant law in the books, every question on the floor of Parliament, every committee hearing, every request for documents, every order paper, every point of order.”
“Fight for the people of Ghana in the court of public opinion as well. Fight until the Ghanaian people receive all the answers they deserve—in writing, under oath if necessary,” he said, underscoring that the party will sustain its demands across all formal channels until full public scrutiny of the DGPP loss is achieved.
