A leading activist of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mawulorm Adzasu, has called for a calm, fact-based dialogue amidst the ongoing public dispute surrounding the reported US$1.7 billion figure linked to the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).
Adzasu’s comments follow growing political fallout after parliamentary scrutinies and international financial reports highlighted heavy expenditures under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).
Writing on the matter, the activist emphasised that the discussion must strictly rest on verified records rather than political posturing. He fully rallied behind GoldBod Chief Executive Officer, Mr Sammy Gyamfi, who has expressed readiness to face Parliament and outline the true position of the state agency’s accounts.
“The ongoing debate surrounding GoldBod and the reported US$1.7 billion figure deserves clarity, not political sensationalism,” Adzasu noted.
Highlighting the fundamental distinctions in financial reporting, the activist urged critics and the public to differentiate between an operational loss directly incurred on GoldBod’s balance sheet and broader fiscal adjustments recorded under the central bank’s gold-buying scheme.
“Parliamentary scrutiny is necessary in a democracy, and I fully support the Minority’s right to ask questions. However, when serious financial figures are presented to the Ghanaian public, we must clearly distinguish between a loss directly recorded by GoldBod and a financial impact associated with the broader Domestic Gold Purchase Programme,” he argued.
While acknowledging the duty of state oversight institutions to probe public spending, Adzasu insisted that GoldBod remains a crucial vehicle designed to ensure Ghana maximizes profits from its natural resources.
“If there is evidence of wrongdoing, let it be investigated. If there is a financial loss, let the responsible institution explain it. But if a figure is being misunderstood or presented without its proper context, let us correct the record,” Adzasu asserted.
“GoldBod represents an important national effort to ensure that Ghana derives greater value from its gold resources. We must therefore strengthen the institution through constructive scrutiny, not weaken public confidence through unverified political claims. Ghana’s gold belongs to Ghana, and the Ghanaian people deserve the truth,” he added.
Adzasu reaffirmed his support for the administration’s institutional integrity, maintaining that only a clear, objective account will serve the interest of Ghanaians.

GOLDBOD: LET THE FACTS SPEAK
The ongoing debate surrounding GoldBod and the reported US$1.7 billion figure deserves clarity, not political sensationalism.
As a committed member of the National Democratic Congress. I stand with GoldBod CEO, Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, in demanding that this matter be discussed on the basis of facts, official records and proper accounting principles.
Parliamentary scrutiny is necessary in a democracy, and I fully support the Minority’s right to ask questions. However, when serious financial figures are presented to the Ghanaian public, we must clearly distinguish between a loss directly recorded by GoldBod and a financial impact associated with the broader Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.
These distinctions matter.
Mr. Sammy Gyamfi has indicated his readiness to appear before Parliament and explain GoldBod’s operations. I consider that willingness to account a positive demonstration of confidence in the institution’s records.
My position is simple:
If there is evidence of wrongdoing, let it be investigated. If there is a financial loss, let the responsible institution explain it. But if a figure is being misunderstood or presented without its proper context, let us correct the record.
Ghanaians deserve transparency, accountability and accurate information.
GoldBod represents an important national effort to ensure that Ghana derives greater value from its gold resources. We must therefore strengthen the institution through constructive scrutiny not weaken public confidence through unverified political claims.
I will continue to support the government and defend the integrity of its institutions, while also encouraging accountability wherever necessary.
