Residents of Akoroso, a community near Koforidua in the Eastern Region, have been left in a state of utter shock following the arrest of a 47-year-old woman for allegedly burying her newborn grandchild alive.

The suspect, identified as Akua Abrokwaa, is reported to have carried out the heinous act shortly after her daughter gave birth on Sunday.

The chilling incident came to light after observant community members grew suspicious of the situation and quickly reported the matter to local traditional authorities.

Detailing the sequence of events, the Assembly Member for the area, Hon. Kofi Quainoo Stephenas, disclosed that the matter was initially brought before the chief of the community. The traditional leader subsequently summoned Abrokwaa to respond to the allegations, but she blatantly refused to honour the chief’s invitation.

Following her defiant refusal to appear before the traditional council, the matter was immediately escalated and formally reported to the police for swift action.

Hon. Stephenas confirmed that officers from the Akim Oda Divisional Police Command moved in promptly to arrest the suspect. Both Akua Abrokwaa and her daughter are currently in police custody at Oda, where they are assisting investigators to unravel the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Meanwhile, the exact condition and whereabouts of the infant remain central to the ongoing police probe.

Although the police administration is yet to issue an official statement on the matter, sources close to the investigation indicate that active steps are being taken to establish the motive behind the alleged crime and ensure justice is served.
