Veteran gospel artiste Stella Cobby has revealed that she has yet to receive a penny from the Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO), despite her years in the music industry.
Speaking in an interview on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Mid-Morning Show, the musician admitted to having a limited understanding of how music rights function in Ghana. She subsequently urged officials from GHAMRO and the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) to roll out comprehensive public education campaigns for local artistes.
Addressing a question regarding what she would like to see changed in the industry, Cobby highlighted the knowledge gap surrounding copyright and royalty collection.
“I will encourage MUSIGA and GHAMRO to provide intensive education on how music rights operate in Ghana. Personally, I have not received a penny from GHAMRO. That’s why I want officials to provide that public education on music rights. I feel a lot of people are not knowledgeable about music rights in Ghana. So to help deal with that, they have to provide that education,” she stated.
Despite her frustration with royalty administration, the musician expressed gratitude for the ongoing backing from the media throughout her career, noting that her music would not have made such a significant impact without their support.
