President John Dramani Mahama has cut sod for the construction of a seven-storey multi-purpose car park and commercial complex at Terminal 3 of the Accra International Airport, a major investment to expand airport capacity and enhance the passenger experience.

The facility will provide approximately 2,030 covered parking bays, alongside commercial, entertainment and hospitality spaces.

President Mahama said the Government’s strategy is not merely to attract more passengers, but to position Ghana as a preferred destination, convenient transit point and competitive aviation hub in Africa.

He noted that passenger traffic at the airport has increased from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025, underscoring the need for expanded infrastructure.

The President reaffirmed Government’s commitment to strengthening aviation infrastructure and connectivity, while emphasising professionalism, discipline and courtesy across the aviation sector.

He further disclosed that the airport projects including the new GCAA control tower, refurbishment of Terminal 2, the transfer concourse between Terminals 2 and 3, and the new parking and commercial development are being funded entirely from the balance sheets of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority and Ghana Airports Company Limited, without direct government funding.

The upcoming development at the airport aims to significantly expand parking, lodging, and commercial capacity within the capital’s main aviation hub.

The proposed facility will feature a seven-storey carpark equipped with over 2,000 parking bays, alongside two modern hotels designed to accommodate international travellers and transit passengers.

A dedicated pedestrian connector will link the new complex directly to the terminal building to ensure seamless access.

In addition to transport and accommodation facilities, the complex will house a shopping mall containing a food court, retail outlets, and commercial office space available for rental.

The project design also integrates recreational and leisure elements, including a sky lounge for social activities and entertainment, as well as a sky observatory structured to give visitors elevated views of aircraft landings and take-offs
