Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has reiterated Ghana’s readiness to forge high-value, mutually beneficial partnerships in the energy sector to drive local capacity and continental industrialisation.

Speaking at the Africa Oil Week Presidential Dinner, where she joined government ministers, senior officials, investors, and key industry leaders, the Vice President highlighted the need to look beyond raw resource extraction to build lasting national wealth.

“Ghana remains open to serious, long-term investment that is mutually beneficial,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stated. “Our economies need the revenues generated by our natural resources, but the greater opportunity lies in how we develop them, the capacity we build around them, and how much of the resulting value stays in our countries.”

She noted that achieving sustainable development in the energy sector will require strategic collaborations that blend global capital and technical expertise with increased African participation.

During her remarks, the Vice President acknowledged the role of global energy giants, including ExxonMobil, while urging them to deepen local capacity building in host nations. She also tasked state enterprises to take a leading role in resource development.

“In Ghana, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) must position Ghana to play a greater role in developing our own resources while attracting the right investment,” she stressed.

Addressing the broader landscape across the continent, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang urged African nations to strengthen homegrown institutions and expand regional collaboration to ensure the continent retains control over its energy trajectory.

“For Africa to play a greater role in shaping its energy future, we need stronger African companies in strategic sectors, investment in our technical capabilities, and greater participation by African businesses across the energy value chain,” she said. “We must also leverage regional markets so that our resources support industrialisation and economic transformation across the continent.”
