The General Assembly of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has approved a revised 2026 budget, following an upward review of the Assembly’s revenue projections, including an increase in its Internally Generated Fund (IGF) target mid-year.
The revised budget represents an increase of about GH¢34.65 million, 26.76 per cent, over the Assembly’s original 2026 budget as the AMA moves to strengthen revenue mobilisation and finance additional programmes and infrastructure projects during the second half of the year.
The revised mid-year budget, which was presented on Thursday, 13th August, 2026, to the General Assembly by the Metro Director of Budget, Mr Noble Atsu Ahadzie, on behalf of the Mayor, forms part of the statutory assessment of the Assembly’s revenue, expenditure, programmes and projects.
Speaking during the approval, Mr. Ahadzie explained that the review was undertaken in line with Sections 28(1) and 35(1) of the Public Financial Management Act, 2016 (Act 921), which provided for the review of the budgets of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies and supplementary provisions where allocations were inadequate or expenditure items had not been captured in the original budget.
He said the exercise was intended to assess the Assembly’s financial performance, improve efficiency in resource mobilisation and utilisation, support informed management decisions and provide technical guidance for the implementation of the budget during the remaining months of the year.
He said the revised estimates also increased expected revenue from markets, permits, and other economic activities, reflecting the Assembly’s decision to strengthen revenue mobilisation across various business and property-related sources during the second half of the year.
Touching on education, Mr. Ahadzie said the Assembly increased provisions for key interventions, including public education and sensitisation, teaching and learning materials, scholarships and other educational support programmes.
He said the increase in revenue projections had also created room for the inclusion of additional infrastructure and social intervention projects in the revised budget, adding that the revised budget further provided funds for the procurement of tricycles, school bags, tablets as well as a capacity-building programme for Assembly Members.
Among the projects approved for inclusion was the reconstruction of the Awudome Cemetery walls, as well as the rehabilitation of several basic school facilities across the metropolis.
Some of the education projects included the renovation of classroom blocks at Ashia-Mills JHS and Primary School, Central Mosque 1 and 2 Primary School, Accra Presbyterian Primary School, Amamomo JHS 1 and 2, Akoto Lantey Primary School and Aayalolo Kindergarten.
With the approval, the Assembly is expected to intensify revenue mobilisation during the second half of 2026 to meet the revised IGF target and provide the financial resources required to implement the additional programmes and projects approved by the General Assembly.
