Transport operators in the country have formally requested a review of public transport fares from the Ministry of Transport.
In a joint press release issued by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), the leadership confirmed that the proposal aligns with the governing Administrative Instrument.
“The leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) wishes to inform the general public that the Union has submitted a request to the Ministry of Transport for a review of public transport fares, in line with the Administrative Instrument,” the statement said.
The operators explained that the submission forms part of the established consultative framework used to determine and adjust commercial transport fares, taking into consideration key operational inputs.
Assuring commuters and stakeholders of a transparent process, the leadership noted that formal deliberations with government representatives will begin shortly.
“We wish to assure the general public that engagement will soon commence with the Ministry of Transport and the outcome will be communicated in due course,” the statement added.
The transport bodies also appealed for calm across the sector while negotiations proceed.
“We therefore urge all drivers, station masters, transport owners, and the general public to remain calm and await the outcome of the process,” the operators stated.
The statement was jointly signed by the General Secretary of the GPRTU of TUC, Ghana, Mr. Godfred Abulbire, and the General Secretary of the GRTCC, Mr. Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah.
